Roald Dahl is the author at the core of our next international collaboration: thanks to Head4Arts and Literature Wales, our social reading app, Betwyll, lands in Wales with #TwWonka.
Roald Dahl on Betwyll to promote Welsh
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl is the text chosen for the students from Pen-y-Dre High School and Goetre Primary School to read and comment in English and Welsh via Betwyll, TwLetteratura’s social reading app, from February, 27 to March, 28. Through this project we will come back to the chocolate factory where we previously played in 2015 led by Maria Cristina Berti and Erika Pucci, the two Italian teachers who had designed the first #TwWonka project using TwLetteratura’s method.
The project has developed thanks to our Tandem Europe experience, which introduced us to Head4Arts, a Welsh organization promoting arts and creativity at the grassroots level, and Literature Wales, a national company promoting the development of literature in Wales based in Cardiff, Roald Dahl’s home town.
The idea of using Betwyll to promote the Welsh language through social reading projects for local schools emerged after a first series of workshops on TwLetteratura’s method organized in Llanhilleth, Merthyr Tydfil and Cardiff last November. Attendees included librarians, teachers, writers, youth leaders and other cultural organizations.
These first exchanges have resulted in #TwWonka, a project directly run by Literature Wales in collaboration with Head4Arts on Betwyll. A writer and an illustrator will also be an active part of the project, inspiring teachers and pupils with new ideas, techniques and word play to form the creation of twylls inspired by Roald Dahl’s text. The teachers and the facilitators involved had the chance to experiment with our social reading method and app on February, 16, during a kick-off workshop held by Pierluigi Vaccaneo in preparation to the project launch. The #TwWonka project, reserved to the students of the two schools involved, will close with a final event in April, at which we will present the developments of the game and announce future collaborations.
