Cheritage: cultural heritage in AR

TwLetteratura is one of the partners in Cheritage, a European project promoting cultural heritage through augmented reality.

Cheritage – A visual library of cultural heritage is the title of the Erasmus+ project we are implementing along with other 7 European countries to promote our cultural heritage through augmented reality. The project includes a series of thematic learning activities in the different countries, besides some coordination meetings amongst the partners. Cheritage was launched in October in Romania, home country to the project coordinator: Biblioteca Judeteana Antim Ivireanul in Ramnicu Valcea, our partner during the 2016-2017 edition of  Tandem Europe, where we met and designed the project “Let’s culture together”.

Cheritage: the project goals

The project will lead to the creation of a visual library of cultural heritage of the participating countries. There, each partner will present a list of items representative of their national material and immaterial heritage, which will be accessible in an augmented modality thanks to an AR application. Of course, the list will not be exhaustive but, precisely for its virtual nature, will remain open to further developments and integrations.

The proposed contents will be developed during the project through a series of thematic workshops run from time to time by the various partners, each based on its expertise. The participants to the workshops will thus have the opportunity to build the necessary skills to develop digital contents and transfer them in their operational contexts, in turn.

In line with the strategic framework for European cooperation in education and training (ET2020), the project aims to achieve the following goals:

  1. increasing awareness on the European cultural heritage
  2. prototyping a learning method based on augmented reality
  3. developing adult learners’ digital skills using AR technology
  4. facilitating the transfer of innovative practices to the European educational communities

Cheritage: the partners

Together with us and Biblioteca Judeteana, the project involves other six partners active in culture, education and cultural innovation from other six European countries: Czech Republic, Malta, Greece, Portugal, Slovenia and Ireland. Here’s who they are and what they do.

  • Knihovna Kroměřížka (Czech Republic), a public library based in Kroměříž, a Moravian city included in the Unesco World Heritage Sites list for its castle and beautiful gardens, and a former partner of Biblioteca Judeteana. The first learning activity took place here, in February 2019, focusing on research and documentation.
  • TR Associates (Malta): a company bringing open innovation to the marketplace in various fields: urban and rural development, education, intelligent transport, e-business, green technologies. The second learning activity will take place here in May 2019, focusing on the use of digital platforms for the promotion of cultural heritage.
  • European Institute for Local Development (Greece): an independent non-governmental organization promoting local development providing education through new technologies. EILD will host the mid-term transnational coordination meeting, in June 2019.
  • the Department of photography of Visoka Sola Za Storitve (Slovenia), a higher school of applied sciences based in Ljubljana. The third learning activity on photography and audio-video content development will take place here in October 2019.
  • Escola Profissional Cristóvão Colombo (Portugal): a vocational school providing training on ICT. The fourth learning activity on augmented reality will take place here in March 2020.
  • Inventya (Ireland), an innovation management company specialized in market intelligence and the commercialization of advanced technological and scientific products. Inventya will host the final evaluation meeting in June 2020.

TwLetteratura’s contribution

Italy will host the Cheritage partners in May 2020, when the project results will be showcased during the Turin International Book Fair. As TwLetteratura we thought to develop the starting list of Italian cultural heritage items building on our approach and passion: social reading and books. We will therefore suggest an itinerary across the most famous Italian literary locations, in a tour to discover key landscapes, periods and authors of our culture. Besides experiencing these places through augmented reality, it will be possible to share personal memories, thoughts and reflections related to these places and to the works that captured them, thus enriching the visual library with everyone’s contribution.

Keep following us for updates on the next steps of the project!
